Forgetful

Worried about my failing memory I visited the doctor who sent me to the nurse…..I was not impressed by the questions.

Forgetful

Today I went to see the nurse,
Thought I had that old age curse
For when I got to my top stair
I’d forgotten why I went up there

So many times on bended knees
I prayed God help me find my keys
She asked me questions, had to think
How many units did I drink drink

Hard to tell, knock off a few
But something that I never do
Is lose the glasses, or the brandy
I always, always keep them handy

What’s the year, and name the season
I beg you give to me a reason
In mac and wellies feeling glummer
As wet and dripping, mutter, summer

The PM’s name and your address
If you don’t know ’em, must confess
She now has added up the score
Then tells she is very sure

Alzheimer’s  hasn’t come my way
Dementia, no, well not today
Shown to the door I want to shout
That’s not what I have come about

It’s all the little things that I’ve missed
Like that elusive shopping list
The stamped letter that I always fail
To take out of bag and put In mail

Remote control and somewhat worse
When I can’t locate my purse
There’s something else I have to tell…
but I’ve forgotten that as well

I have always written poetry but when my husband died suddenly I used it as a kind of therapy. I don’t usually share these unless I feel they will help someone in distress. The ones I share are mostly humorous intended to bring a smile in what I feel can be a very lonely world... I have written four booklets and now a Corona chronicles which is just twelve poems writ while I am in jail...oh sorry I meant lockdown. Am on my way for a second booklet.. Trying to make folk smile and take a minutes release from these difficult times helps me forget my sight problems..
