Raised Garden Beds: Top Tips For A Summer Project
Now’s a great time to think about getting even more out of your garden this year.
Our Horticulture team are always on hand to offer advice at Morrisons Garden Centres, but here are some of their early season tips to get you thinking about a rewarding summer challenge for the months ahead – with a raised garden bed feature.
1. Choose the right posts
For taller 3 or 4 sided beds, go for treated posts that allow you to have minimum 1ft of the post driven into the ground.
2. Support your soil with a strong frame
On slopes to your terracing in particular, use sleepers and good quality 3ft+ treated stakes to support the weight of the soil.
3. Make sure you can reach the middle for easier planting and weeding
A metre wide is usually a manageable space, but you can judge your own reach and work from here.
4. Underplant decorative grasses, bulbs & flowering plants
Treat a raised garden bed as you would herbaceous borders, with layered planting. This will provide a good covering underneath a central feature shrub.
5. Grow your own vegetables or herbs
Raised beds are ideal for carrots and parsnips if you keep your soil fresh and loose, while cabbage and kale will need the soil compacting.
6. Water well from the first planting
Always water plants well from the word go, to allow them to settle in quickly. Give your plants and flowers plenty to drink in hot weather, and keep on top of the weeding to make sure they get all the nutrients from your bed.
7. Always put weed matting under taller beds
Keep that grass and weeds at bay. If you don’t want to use weed matting, use thick layers of newspaper or cardboard.
