Clever uses for Kirby grips
Kirby grips – also known as hairpins, hair grips or bobby pins – are an inexpensive and versatile hair styling accessory used the world over.
They’re incredibly useful for holding hair in place, but if that’s all you use them for, you’re missing a trick.
There are dozens of clever uses for Kirby grips. Here are a few of our favourites.
Hold a nail in place
Protect your fingers next time you’re hanging something on the wall with this simple trick. Place a nail inside a hairpin to secure it in place so you can hammer without putting your fingers at risk.
As a toothpaste clip
Securing a Kirby grip over your tube of toothpaste will help keep any from moving around the tube as you use it, so you’ll always be able to see how much you’ve got left.
Pit cherries or olives
This is a great trick if you’re cooking with cherries or olives and need to remove the pits. Push the two ends of a hairpin through the top of a cherry or olive, so the pit is between both ends of the Kirby grip. Pull the Kirby grip through – it will bring the pit along with it.
Easy start tape roll
Never lose the start of a tape roll again with this simple trick. Roll a bobby pin around the edge of a roll of tape. When you need it next, you can see exactly where it begins.
Hold a hem in place
If you have a hem that has come unstitched while you’re away from home, you can use a Kirby grip to hold it in place until you can stitch it back together.
Reset your electronics
If you have a device that needs to be reset with a pinhead, a Kirby grip will usually do the job just fine. Remove the rubber coating if it has one to reveal a sharper edge.
Fix a broken zipper
If the handle of your zipper ever breaks, this is a simple alternative. Slide a hairpin through the zipper loop and use it to pull up and down.
