Is it worth celebrating Valentine’s Day?
Valentine’s Day is a tradition that divides opinion.
Some love it, while others view it as a school-age tradition that has no place in an adult relationship.
On the one hand, it’s a great opportunity to stop and celebrate the ones you love and do something romantic for your partner. You can plan something special, do something thoughtful, or use the occasion to exchange gifts.
Others take a more cynical view. Valentine’s Day is essentially a consumer event, designed to make us buy more – around this time of year shops are flooded with red and pink-themed gifts and cards we feel obligated to buy.
Showing your other half you love and value them shouldn’t happen on just one day a year; and in fact celebrating your relationship on Valentine’s Day can translate into busy restaurants and paying a premium on chocolate, cards and flowers.
And if you’re not in a relationship at all, Valentine’s Day can be a lonely occasion – with so much emphasis on romantic love, single people are often made to feel less-than around this time of year.
What do you think? Is Valentine’s Day worth celebrating? Or is it best ignored?
