6 tips to stop getting ladders in your tights

Ladders are like silent ninjas: They silently sneak up and attack your pristine tights before you even have the chance to realise what’s happened.

No matter how careful you are, few of us can end a day without runs or tears. This is something Twitter user Lauren Duca is particularly irritated by, so she asked the internet for advice on how not to ruin your tights.

As it turns out, there are some nifty hacks out there to stop your tights getting bedraggled. Here are some you can try yourself…

1. File your nails

This one is a bit of a no-brainer, but is a huge help. It might not be scientific, but we predict 70% of holes in tights stem from your nails being too long or jagged, catching on the delicate nylon and ripping them.

But this can be fixed: File your nails! Cut them! Not only will your mum appreciate your sensible new look, but you’ll also save yourself a whole lot of money buying tights.

2. Use hairspray

If you’re really not keen on getting rid of your acrylics, you should try this genius tip.

If you lightly spray your tights with hairspray – which you probably already have lying in your bathroom – the fibres will bond together and reduce the likelihood of getting runs.

3. Freeze them

Many of these hacks have to do with strengthening the fibres of the tights, and this one is no different. Twitter user Sophia Cannon suggests freezing your tights, which stops them from fraying.

A brilliant idea, but we can’t say we’re thrilled at the prospect of putting on cold tights – winter mornings are hard enough as it is.

4. Moisturise

This tip has more to do with preparing your skin for tights rather than the other way round. If you moisturise your skin before putting yours on, everything will be silky smooth and there will be no chance of rough skin catching and tearing the tights.

Plus, you’ll have the added bonus of your legs feeling amazing.

5. Pull them up from the bottom

When we’re in a hurry, many of us fall into the trap of trying to get our tights on as quickly as possible. However, do this at your peril: If you pull them up from the top, you’re more likely to accidentally stretch them in the wrong places or put your finger through the material.

Instead, take an extra few seconds to pull your tights up from the bottom, to ensure you don’t get ladders before you’ve even left the house.

6. Nail polish

Sure, this is more of a trick for how to prevent holes from becoming bigger rather than avoiding them entirely, but it’s still worth mentioning.

Dabbing a bit of nail polish on the ladder will stop it from taking over your whole leg – but just remember to use clear varnish. Accidentally putting a neon colour on your black tights definitely isn’t a good look.
