Would you give up bacon?

A new study has linked eating processed meats like bacon, sausages and ham to a greater risk of breast cancer for older women.

The study found that post-menopausal women who ate roughly two sausages or three rashers of bacon a week – the equivalent of 9g a day – were a fifth more likely to develop breast cancer than those who avoided processed meat altogether.

The findings revealed that even those who ate small and infrequent servings of these foods were 15 per cent more likely to develop breast cancer compared to those who abstained.

This follows closely after warnings from the World Health Organisation in 2015 that processed meat, including bacon, is carcinogenic.

It’s the strongest evidence yet that a connection between these foods and breast cancer exists. One in six cases of cancer in the UK are breast cancer, with 55,000 new cases a year.

Cured, fermented and processed meats are already closely linked with bowel cancer.

Despite strong warnings that bacon and sausage are linked to a greater risk of cancer, these products are still eaten daily or weekly by people all over the UK.

What do you think? Would you give up bacon knowing it increases your risk of cancer?

Or do you believe this is just another scaremongering story?
