A new Gaudí attraction opens in Barcelona today

and it’s a real feast for the eyes!

All you need to know about the new museum.

Swirling shapes, colourful mosaics and rule-breaking design were signatures of architect supremo Antoni Gaudí, and his creations are some of the biggest tourist-pleasers in Barcelona.

Now there’s a new building for fans to scope out, ranking alongside scenic public area, Parc Güell,  striking home, Casa Batlló, and unfinished cathedral, Sagrada Família.

From November 16, Gaudís Casa Vicens, will be open to the public as a museum following three years of renovation. Located in the Gràcia district, it was the artist’s first residential construction, built between 1883 and 1885 for the Vicens family as a summer house in an area that was historically a village.

Graphic and geometric in style, it’s regarded as one of the first buildings in the Modernisme movement and was declared a Unesco World Heritage Site in 2005.

Along with the house itself, attractions will include temporary exhibitions, a La Capell shop and a cafe in the garden, which is filled with Mediterranean flowers in the spirit of the original outdoor landscaping.

Highlights of the interior include a smoking room with a ceiling designed to replicate palms and clusters of dates, a dining room featuring wooden furniture designed by Gaudí, and a sitting room with a trompe-l’oeil depicting flying birds and climbing plants. A rooftop area, influenced by Islamic and Asian architecture, is also accessible to the public.
