Supporting your mental health in later life
Good mental health is important at every age, and during Mind & Body month at Silversurfers we’ve been looking at how mental health can impact overall wellbeing.
Each stage in life has its own unique challenges when it comes to staying fit, healthy and at our best – and understanding how to look after yourself and your loved ones at every stage can go a long way.
In later life, some of the biggest challenges are loneliness and depression, dementia, and lack of mental stimulation.
Using the web as a resource
If you want more information and advice about how to support your mental health in later life, here are some of the best resources the web has to offer.
The Mental Health Foundation has put together a comprehensive how-to guide called Look after your mental health in later life. This is an excellent place to start and covers everything from relationships to physical health, poverty and participation in meaningful activities.
Age UK is an excellent resource for older adults or anyone looking after elderly parents and family members. It offers useful, straightforward information and advice about a range of mental health topics including loneliness, mental wellbeing and dementia.
For another perspective, check out these simple tips from professor and occupational therapist Florence Clark for sustainable, successful ageing. The tips are straightforward and backed by years of research, too.
Perfect for any age, here’s 10 top tips for good mental health from the charity PeopleFirst. The NHS has also posted a useful guide for five steps to mental wellbeing, and has plenty of other resources you can find from there.
