Why you need to start making your Christmas Cake now

If you’d like to make your own Christmas cake this year, now is the time to get started.

By baking it well ahead of December and following these simple pointers from our Morrisons chefs, you’ll be able to create a traditional Christmas treat with bells on.

1. Start your cake in Now

Give your cake lots of time to mature and firm up. If you eat it too soon after baking, it will crumble. You’ll also need to ‘feed’ your Christmas cake every two weeks with your favourite liquor, so the more time you have to do this, the better and more Christmassy your cake will taste.

2. Buy all your ingredients together

Christmas cakes need quite a few ingredients – and some that you probably don’t keep in your cupboards all the time. It’s a good idea to buy everything you need at once – shopping online by recipe is a good way to get everything you need, tick it off the list and keep it all together until you’re ready to bake.

3. Feed your Christmas Cake every two weeks

Once you’ve baked your cake, you can make it taste as Christmassy as possible by ‘feeding’ it at regular intervals. This also helps it to mature and firm up, so you’ll get a rich, moist slice rather than a crumbly serving.

How to feed a Christmas Cake

  • Unwrap the cake
  • Brush the top and sides with Brandy, Rum or Sherry
  • Re-wrap in greaseproof paper and foil
  • Store in an airtight container
  • Repeat every two weeks

4. Make two, three, four…or more

Christmas cakes are a great idea for a Christmas gift – and you can do it every year for friends and family.

5. Get the grandkids involved

Baking a Christmas cake is a lovely way to get the kids baking, or spend time with other members of your family. You could start it as a new tradition – giving each person a particular job to do or adding a quirky finishing touch as a signature decoration each year.
