Top Of The Pops first aired 60 years ago today on 1st January 1964!
On January 1 1964, Top Of The Pops made its television debut. Intended to run for only six weeks, it became a fixture on our screens for 42 years and was one of the most influential programmes in British TV history, changing the way we consumed music and influencing generations of young people to pick up a guitar and chase their dreams.
At the height of its popularity in the 70s and 80s, Top Of The Pops was one of the most watched shows on television – it was the best place to hear new songs and see live performances of chart-topping hits.
The show’s commitment to showing a wide range of new performers and reigning pop superstars made it surprising, exciting and always worth a watch.
