Tips to keep your dog cool this summer

Heat can be hard on our furry friends – here’s our top tips to help keep your dog safe and comfortable all summer long.

Find water

Even if your dog is not a natural swimmer, a run along the beach or a game of fetch in a shallow stream can be great fun for breeds of all sizes. The water will help keep them cool and refreshed, too.

Stay hydrated

Just like humans, dogs need to drink lots of water to stay hydrated, particularly in the heat. Keep water bowls topped up around the home, and if you’re going on a long walk or travelling by car, be sure to pack a travel dog bowl to keep them hydrated along the way.

Try frozen treats

Frozen treats are a great way to help keep your dog cool and comfortable during summer. Offering your pet some ice cubes to chew on works well, and is even better if you can put a treat or some bits of kibble in the cubes before freezing. If you have a kong chew toy, you can create a delicious frozen treat for them using ingredients like peanut butter, yogurt and their favourite dog treats.

Walk in the evening

During the hottest days of the year, think carefully about when you’re taking your daily walk. If you can, adjust your usual routine to take a long walk in the evening or early in the morning before it gets too hot.

Consider the pavement

Any paved paths or walkways – particularly those with dark asphalt – can get very hot under the midday sun. Check the pavement by touching it – if it’s uncomfortable for your hand, it will be uncomfortable for their paws. Stick to grass when possible as it’s more comfortable for them on the hottest days.

Get a haircut

Long hair makes dogs even warmer in the summer – now is a great time for a haircut to trim their coat down. No need to go too short; trimming off any extra length will do wonders.

Notice panting

If your dog is panting with their tongue hanging out, this is a good indicator that they are hot as this is the simplest way dogs regulate their breathing and try to cool down. Take this as an indicator that it’s time to find some shade, water and take a break from playing.

Keep the windows down

If you’re taking a car journey, be mindful of how hot the car can feel for your dog. Keep the air con on or windows open so lots of air can circulate.

Make shade

A shady spot where your dog can rest will help them from getting overheated. If you don’t have any natural shade in your back garden, consider setting up a parasol to create a shady spot where they can sleep.

Try a paddling pool

If your dog is naturally drawn to water, a small paddling pool in your back garden can be a welcome treat. Using a sprinkler can also be equally refreshing, or even just hosing them down after a long walk to try and cool off.
