Does the country need a new ‘caretaker’ prime minister?
Theresa May is getting on with the job of negotiating Brexit on our behalf however some of her ministers have been vocal in her absence, and want Chancellor Philip Hammond to replace her as a caretaker Prime Minister, provided he appoints Brexit Secretary David Davis as his deputy and agrees to stand down before the next election, it has been reported.
Cabinet colleagues want Mr Hammond installed as leader before October’s party conference, reports The Sunday Times.
The ministers will reportedly ensure he only assumes the role for two years, so someone else can lead the party into the next election. Some back calling an election in 2019 after Brexit to give voters a say on the deal.
Another of Mr Hammond’s former cabinet colleagues told the paper that the chancellor had said he was ready to lead: “He told me that if Theresa May could be prime minister, so could he.”
What are your views? Is this back stabbing by her ministers making things worse? Are you confident in her ability or has Theresa May lost credibility? Should she stay to negotiate Brexit for us? Is there someone you think could do a better job? Who would you choose from these three potentials standing in the wings – Philip Hammond, David Davis or Boris Johnson?
