Red Roses for a Lady

I have written this one for all the people who wish they had acted a bit sooner rather than later to pursue their dream.

Red Roses for a Lady

She’s always there at eight o’clock,
Queueing for our bus,
And I’m always there behind her,
Wishing..’we’ could be an..’us’.

I’d really like to tell her,
Just how I really feel.
That I’d like to buy her presents,
Or take her for a meal.

I’d like to get to know her,
Find out just what makes her tick.
I have a million questions,
But the bus arrives so quick.

What is her name? where is her house?
Has she come far? or is she local?
My mouth seems full of cotton wool,
I would sound just like a yokel.

But I can feel that we have empathy,
When we stand there face to face.
There’s a definite connection,
And my heart begins to race.

I stand and look into her eyes,
Then my knees begin to shake.
And then I blush and turn away,
Afraid..that it was all a big mistake.

Next time I see her at the stop,
I’m going to say hello,
And I’m going to ask her loads of things,
Before we have to go.

And so I thought I’d get a grip,
Am I a man or just a mouse?
When Valentine’s Day arrived at last,
I set off from my house.

Ten red roses clutched in my hand,
Heart thumping in my chest.
Will she be at the bus stop,
Will she think that I’m a pest!

She IS there..looking beautiful,
At the back end of the queue.
So I tap her on the shoulder,
Lift the roses into view.

As she turned to face me,
An arm slid round her waist.
A macho voice said..”sorry I’m late”,
My heart sank, as they embraced.

The man looked at the roses,
Then frowning..looked at me.
I said..”Roses for your lady”?
“Each stems only 50p”.

All my dreams were shattered,
He bought every single one.
And I walked away with a broken heart,
Well…what else could I have done??

Not a lot to tell...just an ordinary man...always loved writing but never had the time until now...hope I've got a few years left to write about the million things I would like to get down on paper be it in poetry form or just plain old story telling. Just in case anyone would like me to come along to their group and read a few of my poems live..I would be happy to do so within the confines of Kent or Sussex...I would just need to cover my time and petrol costs...plus a cup of tea and a biscuit. Just email [email protected] To answer some of your questions= ex-army..ex -jackeroo...ex-builder..ex-quite a few other things..still rocking...married...2 + 3 children...7 grandchildren...retired...love custard creams. I have now published my first collection of poems which are now available on Amazon under the title of..LAST APPLE ON THE TREE. The book consists of twenty seven poems covering a wide range of topics and emotions. My second book has just been published and is called A BREEZE IN THE WILLOWS, also available on Amazon. I hope that everyone will get as much enjoyment reading them, as I did writing them.
