The UK’s best Christmas markets

Christmas Market season is officially in full swing, and all over the country cities are hosting their very own version of the beloved German market tradition.

If you can’t make it all the way to Europe to experience one of the historic markets firsthand, not to worry – there are plenty of great options closer to home.

Here’s a round up of some of the best markets on now, when you can catch them and what to expect.

Edinburgh

Edinburgh’s Christmas programme has gone from strength to strength in recent years, and this time around the market is back and bigger than ever. Spread over three locations in the heart of the city centre, you can find merriment in Princes Street Gardens as well as nearby in St Andrew’s Square and on George street. All the seasonal favourites are there: German food, mulled wine, crafts, a skating rink and amusement rides for people of all ages.

London

There’s several Christmas markets around London to choose from, but if you’re just visiting the city for a weekend of shopping and Christmas fun, head straight to the Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park. Famous for its amusement rides and grand ice skating rink, it’s a great attraction for all ages, and this year is bigger than ever as it celebrates its 10th anniversary. Add to that more than 200 stalls selling everything from Bavarian foods to crafts and gifts, and there’s something here for everyone.

Manchester

Manchester’s award winning Christmas market is one of the most celebrated in the country. Famed for its incredible array of international foods, visitors can expect to find everything from goulash to paella, cinnamon rolls and mulled wine amongst its 300 stalls. The market is spread throughout the city centre in small pockets, but to get to the heart of the action just head to Albert Square.

Bath

The enchanting city of Bath looks even more magical than usual during the festive period when its Christmas market takes over the square around Bath Abbey and the Roman Baths in the centre of the old town. From local handicrafts to Christmas treats and warming drinks, the compact market is great for exploring as you discover the rest of this beautiful city.

Cardiff

Cardiff’s Christmas market is on this year as part of the city’s exciting ‘Step Into Christmas’ programme, which features great family-friendly activities and events throughout the month. More than 120 stalls selling local Welsh delicacies can be found at the market, making it easy to do a bit of last-minute gift buying while you’re there.
