Early life – early money
Early life – early money
“Lend me a florin till friday?- I’ve run out of money you see,
I have got nothing left from his pay bag, and I must get some fish for his tea,
I’ll scrape by if I have to, you know that, but an existence is awfully hard,
He won’t moan or whine, he will think it just fine, if I feed him on stale bread and lard “.
“Lend me a Bob then till payday, the gas has run out and it’s dark,
The kids are alright in the daytime, they can play out all day in the park,
But at night when it’s dark in the parlour, and the mantle is out on the gas,
You just cannot see in the candlelight glow, only shadows of ghosts will you pass “.
“Well just lend me a tanner to help me, just to get me some eggs, or some cheese,
So that I can make something to fill them up, can you? I’m asking you, please?
I can make them an omelette, to feed them, I do have some milk in the jug,
And when they are fed I’ll continue, bodging, at my old ragged rug “.
“Lend me a penny for cobs then, at least they are fresh made today,
Still warm from the oven and tasty, they help keep the hunger away,
I haven’t got money for extras, no fancies or treats for my tea,
I just feed my kids, and my husband – so please lend that penny to me?”
