Autumnal books to curl up with this September
Long nights and a chill in the air are the perfect companion for a good book.
Today we’re sharing a few of our favourite novels that perfectly capture the atmospheric feeling of autumn and take advantage of all that could be lurking in the shadows.
Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte
Charlotte Bronte’s classic gothic masterpiece is an incredible read any time of year, but its use of the supernatural and its dark, brooding hero Mr Rochester make it particularly seasonal for autumn. If you’ve never read it before or haven’t read it for many years, jump back into the pages and appreciate the remarkable courage of orphaned Jane Eyre and enjoy a novel of dazzling intrigue.

Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier
Rebecca’s opening line “Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again…” is one of the most recognising openings of a novel in the last century. Working as a lady’s companion, the novel follows the story of an unnamed heroine who meets and falls in love with the charming and mysterious Max de Winter. When she returns to his estate on the Cornish Coast, she becomes obsessed with his dead wife Rebecca, who is constantly kept in her mind by the housekeeper Mrs Danvers. It’s a haunting story and a great page turner – so much so, it’s never gone out of print. If you’ve never read it, now is the time!

Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte
Another Bronte sister also makes our list with her dark and captivating love story set on the Yorkshire moors. The bleak setting is the perfect backdrop for the tempestuous relationship between Heathcliff and Cathy and just spooky enough to make it the perfect autumn companion.

Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie
Murder on the Orient Express is perhaps Agatha Christie’s most famous murder mystery. Just after midnight, the luxurious train is snowdrift – when an American tycoon is found dead in his compartment, it’s up to detective Poirot to find out who is responsible before they strike again. Makes for entertaining and eerie autumn reading.

A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness
A Discovery of Witches is the first of three books in the All Souls Trilogy. It follows the story of Diana, a lapsed witch and accomplished historian whose life is changed after a chance discovery in Oxford’s Bodleian Library brings magic back into her carefully ordered life. This is a pacey, exciting story about witches, vampires and the creatures who live amongst us – a proper grown up romance story that will have you hooked from page one.
