On the door step

On the door step

On the doorstep
Me and my dad
Would sit there for hours
Happy times we had.

People would stop
Or give us a wave
Never walked by
Looking for time to save.

They would get off the bus
That had come from Crewe
Half past the hour
Is when it was due.

Across from the step
The corner store
Sold everything
And that bit more.

For the best fish and chips
A few doors down
Our Friday night treat
Along with half the town.

Then the hardware store
With that funny smell
Aladdins cave
A door with a bell.

Weighed out nails
In a brown paper bag
Coal buckets and shovels
What you wanted,They had.

Over the road
And up the street
A quality shoe shop
Shoes good for your feet.

Need a suit
Made to measure
Totally affordable
Collect at your leisure.

A furniture store
That let you have it on tick
No need for credit
You were not worried sick.
Up the stairs the ladies store
Fancy hat’s,coats and more.

Not forgetting the fruit shop
Wonderful harvest boxes they would provide
Never knew the cost
But always got first prize.

So the doorstep that we sat on
Many memories I have to share
Lost but not forgotten
In my heart there always there.
