A Song

It’s amazing how a song can make you feel. Mick Westwood explores this in his wonderfully reflective poem

A song

A song stirs a memory, a song brings a smile,
An ‘Anthem’ to stir you, make you proud for awhile,
A sad song reminds you of times that have gone,
Or of lovers you lost, – but the music goes on.

A ‘Hymn’ of true meaning, a ‘Psalm’ chanted low,
Or a ‘Pop’ song you loved, from your youth long ago,
A song from the stage, one that struck at your heart,
Or the last tune you played, – before both had to part.

The song that reminds of your mom, or your dad,
The tune you recall, for the good times you had,
The one that you hum, to yourself everyday,
Or the last piece of music, when she walked away.

A song can do all these, the words lift you high,
They will bring you a smile, or cause you a sigh,
But whatever the matter, whatever the role,
Please keep the music, – strong in your soul!

I am a 71 year old retired coal miner, who spent 30 years working underground. Having time on my hands, and in order to keep my brain exercised, I decided to try to write poetry and put down on paper some of my life experience, and my hopes, dreams and other thoughts. I also do a little gardening, but I am hopeless at housework. Much to my wife's displeasure.
