Lonely White Cross
I am writing about war and conflict as we honour all those who died through two terrible world wars and those who continue to do so in conflicts across the globe.
The photo was taken at Heysham Heights, near Morecambe, Lancashire, when I was visiting family and thought it was particularly poignant when so many lives were lost on the beaches of France.
LONELY WHITE CROSS
I still shed a tear for my comrades who gave their lives in war
Those who protected the innocent and vulnerable
We cannot blame them for the absolute destruction
They are not the ones who are culpable
So many precious lives were destroyed on many sides
There was too much torture, suffering and pain
In unimaginable and horrific circumstances
That none of us should ever want to witness again
I will never celebrate or glorify any war
Like millions of others I just need tranquility
For I can still hear the cries of those many lost souls
In their continued long battle of eternity.
I still see the fear and despair in those young faces
On the killing fields far, far away from home
And the simple grave with the lonely white cross
For those who fell there and were unknown
I may have lost my comrades in arms and my own sight
But I can still see the memories that are as clear as can be
In the roaring silence of my own dark world
My inner most thoughts will be a constant reminder to me
So I simply want to warn you each day about the dangers
Of allowing the powerful and greedy to manipulate and control you
It is up to everyone of us to create a better world for our children
Show loving kindness to strangers by embracing a world wide view.
