He’s Just An Old Stray That Santa Forgot

This poignant poem was written by Tracey Curtis, who has a passion for all things canine!

As well as being an accomplished poet, she has just started up a dog walking and pet minding service with her husband.

He’s Just An Old Stray That Santa Forgot

It was Christmas Eve, and the beer was flowing
The tree was up, and the tinsel was glowing
I looked through the window, to the street down below
And there was this dog, sat out in the snow

“Who is that dog? that’s out in the street
The one that looks sad, so weary and beat,
“He looks really cold, and his eyes are bloodshot.”
“Oh, that’s the old stray that, Santa forgot”.

“Oh that is so sad, so the dog is unknown?
Is that why he sits there, all on his own?”
“Nobody wants him, he’s just an old stray,
he hangs round the park, but they shoo him away”.

“What is his name? Where does he go?
What does he eat? Does anyone know”?.
“He sleeps in a box, that’s all that he’s got,
he’s just, an old stray that Santa forgot”.

“Lets bring him in, it’s starting to snow
The wind’s got up and it’s starting to blow.
Its Christmas Eve, we can’t leave him there
Theres plenty of food, I’m sure we can share”.

“Hello!! Little guy, your looking quite thin
I’ll give you some food, if you follow me in.
I don’t know your name, so I’m calling you Scott.
They say your the stray, that Santa forgot”

“Well not this year boy, your coming with me
I have something for you, and it’s under the tree.
It will keep you warm, in your little box bed
Something to snuggle, when resting your head.

“He rubbed up against me, and I cuddled him tight
As the snow fell upon us, on that Christmas eve night.
As he followed me home, he looked weak and frail
Then he lay by the fire, just wagging his tail

I knew there and then, without any doubt,
He was trying to thank me, for helping him out.
A little sweet tear, rolled down from his eye
So I hugged him once more, and said, “Don’t you cry.”

He held out his paw, and I stroked his sweet head
I said, “Don’t you worry, you’ve found your new bed
You now have a family, and a place of your own
No more will you sleep, in that box all alone.”
