After being a surprise hit sport at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, interest in lawn bowls around the UK has seen a sharp increase.
And while poor weather is often a barrier to playing (unless you’re playing indoors), find a good lawn bowls club and you’ll soon pick up the rules.

If you’re a visual learner, you’ll find plenty of videos about lawn bowls on YouTube. This instructional video by Jonathan Weisbarth is a good place to begin. It’s only five minutes, and it provides a great overview of how to play the sport – and how fun it can be.
For the readers among you, you’ll find an accessible beginners guide to bowls over on BBC Sport. This guide comes complete with instructional diagrams and links to bowling associations around the country.
The Bowls England website also has a great article on the benefits of the game; importantly, it encourages people of any age, gender or fitness level to take it up.
Find a club
Once you’re convinced bowling is for you, the next step is to find a club. At bowlsengland.com, there’s a handy find a club page that only requires you to enter your postcode. The Welsh Bowling Association offers a similar service, And if you live in Scotland, Bowls Scotland has details of club fixtures and events around the country.
