Spring Cleaning Tips
Spring is finally here!
Around this time of year, many of us feel the urge to sweep the dust away and get a ‘fresh start’ with a good spring clean of our home.
We share some tips about how you can get your home back in order without biting off more than you can chew.
Make A Plan
It can be tempting to attack the whole house at once when you’re spring cleaning, but you don’t need to.
Instead, make a plan of action:
- Create a to-do list of all the jobs you have
- Divide your home into mini ‘zones’ to clean instead of thinking about it as one huge task
- Decide what things you need help with from family or friends ready for when we can reunite!
- Plan what days and times you’re going to clean on
- Make a small list of tasks you want to complete during each spring cleaning session
- Don’t spring clean every day or you might end up feeling overwhelmed, sore or bored
Downsize
No matter what your age or how big your home is, you’re bound to have accumulated some clutter over the years. Spring cleaning is the perfect opportunity to downsize your possessions, and you’ll find it easier to clean the rest of the year without as many belongings.
- Unless they are of sentimental or seasonal value, get rid of any clothes or accessories you haven’t worn for a couple of years – out of sight out of mind!
- When you’re arranging books, DVDs or music, see if there are any you would happily give away, and remove them before sorting your shelves
- Decide if there are items you would like to give to family members as gifts
- See if you have any treasures hiding in your loft that you could sell
- Sort other items you want to donate into piles for charity shops when they reopen, recycling bins, friends, or even think about ‘upcycling’ and reusing yourself
Keep The Cost Down
You don’t need to spend lots of money on fancy cleaning products for a spring clean. In many cases, you’ll be able to use what you already have in the house.
Cola:
- Pour a litre bottle down the toilet, leave for an hour, then give it a quick scrub with a brush and flush for a super clean bowl
- If you have stubborn burn on pans, try boiling cola in the pan (stirring occasionally), then rinsing with water and a cloth
Lemon:
- Cut up a lemon, boil it in your kettle in clean water, leave overnight and then rinse to remove limescale build up
- To clean your microwave, mix 1 part lemon juice with 2 parts boiling water, heat for 30 seconds in a bowl, remove and wipe the microwave
- Mix equal parts lemon juice and olive oil then use with a duster to polish wood
White Vinegar:
- Clean your windows by mixing water with a little vinegar, and use old newspapers instead of cloths to apply to dirty glass
- Try using vinegar directly on mould or mildew to remove build-up
- Mix two parts water with one part vinegar and a touch of lemon juice to clean kitchen and bathroom surfaces
