Reading aloud is a fantastic way to bond with your grandchildren and can lay the foundations for a lifetime long love of books.

Perfect picture books
Each Peach Pear Plum by Janet Ahlberg and Allan Ahlberg
This book for very young children rolls of the tongue in the most delightful way. Toddlers will love the rhymes and the puzzle aspect and you’re guaranteed to enjoy the smart little story and the gorgeous illustrations.
The Incredible Book Eating Boy by Oliver Jeffers
For sumptuous, sweet illustrations, this book really takes the biscuit. It’s a quirky tale about a boy who loves to eat books and the unique style and tone will make it a firm favourite with you and your grandchildren.
Shh! We Have a Plan by Chris Haughton
A slick, simple design and a straightforward story with a joke at the end makes this book a real winner. Four hunters set off to silent hunt a bird in the wood but the littlest hunter isn’t very good at staying quiet!
Super storybooks
Ralph is (not) a Spy by Corinne V. Davies, El Ashfield
Told in rhyming verse, this book is great fun to read aloud. It’s packed with disguises, gadgets, morse code, hairspray and cheese sandwiches – it keeps the action and giggles going all the way through.
You’re a Bad Man, Mr Gum! by Andy Stanton
This lively take is great for slightly older readers and both of you are sure to thrill in the variety of excellent laughs in this madcap book. Mr Gum is a truly nasty man but he’s also very funny and the illustrations by David Tazzyman are the perfect accompaniment.
Matilda by Roald Dahl
Every Roald Dalh book for children is a joy to read aloud, but Matilda has some of the funniest and sweetest moments. Show your grandchildren just how magical reading and learning can be and teach them to believe in themselves.

Another great way to pick the perfect books is to take the lead from your grandchildren. If they’re old enough, ask who their favourite authors are and take younger children along to the library and let them loose among the shelves.
