Garden on the go with the best gardening apps
Known for being a therapeutic and relaxing pastime, it’s no surprise gardening is a favourite hobby with the over 50s. From landscape design to growing vegetables, gardening combines imagination and creativity with knowledge and experience, offering a stimulating pastime that challenges you in new ways over time.
Smartphones and tablets are making it easier than ever to nurture your green thumb – today there are literally hundreds of apps on the market that make it easy to find tips, identify plants, and learn more on the go without flipping through a manual or risking harming the garden you’ve worked so hard to build.
If you have a passion for gardening, why not check out the best apps out there and learn how they can make your favourite hobby more satisfying than ever.
Online magazines, guides and galleries
Many of the most prestigious gardening publications have embraced the digital age and have launched an online format of their magazines. Today it’s possible to download favourites like Organic Garden and House & Garden and read them right from your iPhone or iPad.
If you want to get out and visit a garden, there’s an app for that, too. Kew Gardens in London has released two apps to help you discover what’s on in the gardens, view maps and uncover plenty of detailed information of what you can find when you visit. A second app, the Kingdom of Plants, is narrated by David Attenborough and is an interactive journey through some of the most interesting plant species in the gardens.
In a similar vein is the National Garden Schemes app. Free to download, you can use this app to browse the some 3,800 gardens listed, find ones close to your location and find all the information you need about prices, directions and opening times.
Useful online gardening tools
If you’re more interested in practical tools than inspiration, there are some great apps out there worth a try.
Garden Plan Pro is one of the most expensive on the market, but a great resource if you’re seriously into gardening and has a long list of special features. An extensive database can help you figure out exactly what you’d like to plant and when is the best time to plant it. You can also find weather information and tips about crop rotation to help ensure your garden is as vital as possible with each changing season.
The Royal Horticultural Society also has a useful app called Grow Your Own, which has been designed to help you choose and grow vegetables in your own garden. You can also add the varieties you are growing to your profile and the app will remind you of important tasks, as well as warn you about frost and drought in your area. With the help of a few useful apps, you’ll be stepping up your gardening game in no time.
