Fill in the gaps
Keep on top of borders at this stage in the season; it’s ideal with the warmer weather to fill in any gaps that have formed, such as in the herbaceous border.
The best plants for this are annual bedding plants. There is also time to sow some late-flowering but fast-growing plants such as Calendula, Godetia and Clarkia to add a spot more colour to the garden.
Care for your garden
To keep the fruit and vegetables in your garden growing healthily, general care throughout this month is the key. Use rainwater to hydrate blueberries, lingonberries and cranberries regularly, and also change feed for fruit grown in pots to a high potassium (liquid) version. Make sure you stake peas with netting, pea sticks or garden twigs, and regularly water peppers and tomatoes to prevent blossom end rot.

For an event that all the family can enjoy, why not go along to RHS Garden Rosemoor between 10am and 5pm open every day until 25 August. Here you will discover an exciting J.R.R Tolkien exhibition including original illustrations by artist Ted Nasmith from iconic books, garden sculptures, a themed trail, Tolkien memorabilia and a ‘Middle-Earth’ dwelling that will thrill any Tolkien enthusiast.
