Garden activity
To keep your garden healthy and in check it’s important to keep an eye out for lily beetle larvae, which are active this month and could potentially strip your plants.
Another serious pest for plants is vine weevil larvae, so keep an eye out for the orange-headed maggots on suspected plants. Continue to protect susceptible plants from other wildlife such as slugs and snails, and there are always several chemical & biological ways to help with the problem.
Tickle your taste buds with Unusual Vegetables
With the harvest season in full swing why not try a new approach to your vegetable garden by sowing and planting more unusual vegetables such as kohl rabi (much like a turnip), salsify & scorzonera. By creating a variety of crops it will provide your taste buds with a refreshing change. Another alternative to the regular runner beans, cucumbers and squash, why not sow witloof chicory ready for next winter.
How-to for Gardeners on Composting
Get out and venture to RHS Garden Rosemoor, where hands -n gardeners eager to learn new skills will be delighted to find a walk/talk on The Principles of Composting. Make a feature of your Garden
If you are looking to make an impact with your garden this month but not with plants and vegetables, why not have a day at RHS Garden Wisley on the 18 May where you may find something unique.
