My New York Travel Guide…..

From my first glimpse of those glittering sky scrapers, iconic landmarks, stylish streets and vast parklands, my heart fell in love with New York City.

After many years and countless visits, during a lifelong career in the travel and hotel industries, that first “taste” of the Big Apple remained.

At the age of 54 , I decided to follow my dreams and write The Lipstick City Guide to New York.

It took two full years in it’s entirety before the final version was complete, undertaking every aspect from writing, self publishing, selling and marketing, with only a Graphic Designer to help with the layout.

It was a cliched labour of love (and not so) with moments when I could have walked away, never really grasping the enormity of the task undertaken, until I was so far down the line, I had nowhere to go but forward.

The photography was completed during a two week stay on my own, walking the streets and avenues until blisters sat on blisters, covering every part of my tired feet. I was out from the early morning hours and watched many a day slip into night time. Minutes turned to hours, then into endless, endless days, though every finished snapshot captured another glimpse, and spurred me on to completion. My obsession with this City never waning and instead as I delved into it’s very soul, I grew to love it more.

This is definitely a City for walking and although vast, if you stick to the “Uptown, Midtown, Downtown” logic, and spend even just a day in each, you will tickle the surface and get a glimpse of memories to take away with you.

Below is a poem I wrote about New York and the very essence of why this City turned my head and captured my heart, all those years ago.

Lipstick City by Debbie Lindsay Newman Author of The Lipstick City Guide to New York

Shimmering skyscrapers edge long shaded Avenues, crossing Streets that stretch for miles
Eclectic shops are brimming with people, all friendly with welcoming smiles

Rivers surround and roam round Manhattan, hugging these coveted shores
Pockets of sunshine weave through the traffic, honking their Yellow Cab horns

Buildings like Empire, Chrysler and Lipstick, have views that change day by day
Staten Island, the Bronx, the Hamptons and Brooklyn, exist in their own special way

Cafes are filled with enticing aromas, Restaurants beckon and tempt
Wide open spaces ooze music and Shakespeare, as buskers work to pay rent

Hundreds of accents, millions of people, mingle, connect and survive
As the big juicy apple continues it’s journey, and New Yorkers move on with their lives

With a 39 year working career spanning the Travel and Hotel industries, I have lived in Australia & New Zealand, plus have been lucky enough to travel the World, visiting a variety of places including Venezuela, Costa Rica, Peru, South Africa, Borneo & America, to name a few. The highlight of my travels was flying Concorde back from New York, and my greatest life achievement has been writing my first Travel Book "The Lipstick City Guide to New York" at the age of 54. I live in Somerset (home of the Glastonbury Festival, Cider, stunning scenery and of course the recent floods), and currently work from home.
